Calf Stretches for Prolonged Standing

Standing for prolonged periods of time can cause aches and pains in your feet and lower limbs. In addition to wearing comfortable shoes and taking breaks to sit and walk around, one other way that you can prevent or relieve pain is to stretch. A lunging calf stretch can help prevent cramping in the calf muscles, plantar fasciitis, and other foot problems. It can also promote circulation. To do this stretch, stand one step away from a wall and place both palms flat against it. Step your left foot back and bend your right knee into a lunge. Keep your toes pointing forward and slowly push your left heel toward the ground until you feel a stretch in your calf. Hold and then repeat on the opposite foot. Stretching the Feet

Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

  • Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
  • Similar to the previous one, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
  • Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
  • Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising and ice and rest the foot. It is advised to then see a podiatrist for help.

Understanding Charcot Foot

Peripheral neuropathy occurs when there are damaged nerves in the extremities, including the feet. This neuropathy can lead to the weakening of the bones in the foot, which is often known as Charcot foot. When these bones weaken, fractures in the foot can be worse, and bones in the joints can collapse. Ultimately, Charcot foot can disable the foot by causing it to become deformed and potentially require amputation. Some symptoms of Charcot foot include a warmness to the touch of the foot, redness, swelling, and pain. Diabetic patients should also be more aware of Charcot foot because the neuropathy that often goes hand-in-hand with diabetes can lead to this condition as well. What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

What Can I Do About Ingrown Toenails?

Ingrown toenails can cause a great deal of pain and far more serious problems, especially if left untreated. Ingrown toenails can develop when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin of the toe. Common causes can include wearing tight shoes or socks that increase pressure on the big toe, and activities that overuse the toes, like football, soccer, or ballet. Soaking the feet for 20 minutes several times a day can help, but feet should be kept clean and dry as much as possible afterward. Types of Corns and Calluses

Corns and calluses are thickened areas of skin that form as a means of protection on the feet. These thick areas primarily form where the skin has rubbed against something like a shoe. Thickened areas of skin that are larger and irregularly shaped are known as calluses. They usually indicate issues such as bone deformity, improper footwear, or a poor walking style. Hardened areas of skin that are smaller with a central core are known as corns. A variety of corns can form, including soft corns, which usually develop in areas that are moist from sweat or inadequate drying between the toes. Corns that contain nerve fibers and blood vessels are known as vascular corns, which can be very painful. Other types of corns include hard corns, fibrous corns, and seed corns. Patients with corns or calluses that persistently irritate their foot should consult with a podiatrist for treatment.
