What Causes Foot and Ankle Swelling?

Swelling in the lower limbs is caused by a buildup of fluid in the soft tissues of the feet and ankles. Fluids may build up for a variety of reasons. When the foot or ankle is injured, bleeding into a joint may cause immediate swelling, in addition to bruising and pain. Similarly, an increase in synovial fluid in a joint, following an injury such as an ankle sprain, can cause swelling, though this type of swelling is delayed and builds up slowly over time. Certain medical conditions, such as gout, kidney disease, heart problems, arthritis, liver disease, deep vein thrombosis, venous insufficiency, cellulitis, and lymphedema also cause lower limb swelling. If you are pregnant, you are likely to experience foot and ankle swelling due to fluid retention from pregnancy hormones. If you suffer from lower limb swelling, it is suggested that you seek the care of a podiatrist, who can help you find the cause of the swelling and prescribe the appropriate treatments.

When dealing with systemic disease of the feet, it is extremely important to check the affected areas routinely so that any additional problems are caught quickly.  If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles contact Serjik Nazarian, DPM from Sedona Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctor will assist you with all of your podiatric needs.

Systemic Diseases of the Feet

Systemic diseases affect the whole body, and symptoms usually are displayed in the feet. This condition can make a patient’s ability to walk unbearable.  Systemic diseases include gout, diabetes mellitus, neurological disorders, and arthritis.

Gout – is caused by an excess of uric acid in the body. Common symptoms include pain, inflammation, and redness at the metatarsal/phalangeal joint of the base big toe. Gout can be treated by NSAIDs to relieve pain and inflammation, and other drugs that lower the acid levels in the body.

Diabetes mellitus – is an increase in the level of blood sugar that the body cannot counteract with its own insulin. Failure to produce enough insulin is a factor in Diabetes.

Diabetes of the Feet

Diabetic Neuropathy – may lead to damaged nerves and affect the feet through numbness and loss of sensation.

Peripheral Vascular Disease – can restrict the blood flow to the feet, and often times lead to amputation of the feet.

Babies Can Develop an Ingrown Toenail

When the corners of the nail on the big toe grow into the outer edges of the skin, it may be indicative of an ingrown toenail. Babies' toenails are typically soft and flexible, and can curve in at the edges. Additional common symptoms of this ailment can include redness, swelling, and the affected toe may be painful. Ingrown toenails may develop as a result of wearing shoes that do not fit correctly or if the toenails are trimmed improperly. If you feel your child may have an ingrown toenail, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can determine the best treatment for your child.

Ingrown toenails may initially present themselves as a minor discomfort, but they may progress into an infection in the skin without proper treatment. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact Serjik Nazarian, DPM of Sedona Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are caused when the corner or side of a toenail grows into the soft flesh surrounding it. They often result in redness, swelling, pain, and in some cases, infection. This condition typically affects the big toe and may recur if it is not treated properly.

Causes

  • Improper toenail trimming
  • Genetics
  • Improper shoe fitting
  • Injury from pedicures or nail picking
  • Abnormal gait
  • Poor hygiene

You are more likely to develop an ingrown toenail if you are obese, have diabetes, arthritis, or have any fungal infection in your nails. Additionally, people who have foot or toe deformities are at a higher risk of developing an ingrown toenail.

Symptoms

Some symptoms of ingrown toenails are redness, swelling, and pain. In rare cases, there may be a yellowish drainage coming from the nail.

Treatment

Ignoring an ingrown toenail can have serious complications. Infections of the nail border can progress to a deeper soft-tissue infection, which can then turn into a bone infection. You should always speak with your podiatrist if you suspect you have an ingrown toenail, especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation.

What Is Blue Toe Syndrome?

Blue toe syndrome is a condition in which one or more toes develop a lace-like, bluish-purple discoloration (livedo reticularis) due to a blockage of the small blood vessels in the foot. In addition to skin discoloration, blue toe syndrome can cause intense pain in the foot that may radiate higher up into the leg. This condition is often associated with older age and other conditions that affect blood flow, such as atherosclerosis. Left untreated, blue toe syndrome can lead to skin ulceration, tissue death, and even gangrene. If you notice a sudden bluish-purple discoloration in your toes, it is suggested that you seek the care of a podiatrist as soon as possible.

Poor circulation is a serious condition and needs immediate medical attention. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact Serjik Nazarian, DPM of Sedona Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is can be caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. This can restrict the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.

Causes

Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development. It can also cause:

  • Muscle pain, stiffness, or weakness
  • Numbness or cramping in the legs
  • Skin discoloration
  • Slower nail & hair growth
  • Erectile dysfunction

Those who have diabetes or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, as are those who are over 50. If you have poor circulation in the feet and legs it may be caused by PAD and is important to make changes to your lifestyle in order to reduce risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. Exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will dramatically improve conditions.

As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.

An Overview of Foot Pain

Pain can occur anywhere in the foot, and its location may be an indicator of the underlying condition. For instance, heel pain is very common and may be due to plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, injuries, or bone spurs. Pain in either the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th toes may emanate from a muscle imbalance, which eventually causes the toe to become bent in a downward position (hammertoe). Pain in one of the toe joints, the ankle joint, or the joint connecting the toes with the forefoot may be a warning sign of arthritis. Ingrown toenails can cause pain in, and on top of, the big toe. If you feel pain in the ball of your foot, it may be due to Morton’s neuroma—a thickening of tissue surrounding an irritated nerve between the toes. Arches may be painful due to wearing unsupportive shoes, having plantar fasciitis, or if the arches have fallen. Swollen or generally painful feet may be due to pregnancy, the heat, diabetes, or poor blood circulation. If you feel pain in any part of your feet, have a podiatrist perform an examination to diagnose your condition.
